A Brief History of National Steel Car’s Growth Under Gregory Aziz

National Steel Car is the leader in production of steel railway freight cars throughout all of North America. The company is headquartered in Hamilton, Ontario and has been around for over one hundred years. National Steel Car first became a company in 1912. Six local and prominent business men came together to establish the organization. Their goal was to make Canada a competitive leader in the manufacturing of steel railway freight cars – one that would eventually become the largest in North America.

The goal of becoming the largest manufacturer of railway freight cars was finally achieved when Gregory James Aziz oversaw the purchase of National Steel Car from a former owner, Dominion Foundries and Steel (DOFASCO). This happened in 1994. At the time, Gregory J. Aziz had a highly successful career at an investment firm in New York City. National Steel Car came to his firm as a client, and Greg J. Aziz was assigned the task of overseeing the purchase of the company.

National Steel Car’s leadership team was so highly impressed by James Aziz that they decided to hire him into a leadership role with the company. From 1994 to today, he has held numerous leadership positions, including Chief Operating Officer. Today, he serves as the company’s Chief Executive Officer, Chairman of the Board, and President of the company. He is known within the company as someone that fearlessly and boldly strives to always push the company forward. In fact, under his tenure, he has grown National Steel Car to achieve a sterling reputation as a company that will exceed the expectations of its vendors and will set the bar high and reach that bar, only to continue to set the bar higher. Even in his first few years, he grew the company to become massively larger than it was before his time with them. For example, he invested heavily in his employee workforce, knowing that growing the employee base would ultimately grow the production of steel railway freight cars. The team members at National Steel Car grew from around six hundred people to nearly three thousand employees in just a few short years.

This growth in employee base brought about a massive economic growth spurt in Hamilton, Ontario. In addition to growing the work force at National Steel Car, he also grew production at a rapid rate. The company went from producing around 3,500 freight cars each year to over 12,000. For more than a decade NSC has been recognized by the TTX Supplier Evaluation Committee for supplier excellence.
