Betsy DeVos: Solving America’s Public Education Problem

If you were to poll 100 random parents and 100 random public school teachers from locations all around the United States of America, you would find that the vast majority of them have very specific problems with how public education is currently being run. Despite the millions of dollars being poured into the system, students are still struggling to reach standards that are acceptable. International rankings for American education is not in line with how we view ourselves as a country and that is something that President Trump and Betsy DeVos are fully aware of. Betsy DeVos is the Secretary of Education for the United States and she is one of the most vocal proponents for education reform. Let’s learn about DeVos and her life and goals for America’s educational system.

When Betsy DeVos was confirmed by the Senate to operate as the Secretary of Education, there was probably a moment of relief which would quickly have been followed by the acknowledgement that there was a ton of work to do. Betsy DeVos had spent nearly thirty straight years as a private citizen working in order to push education reform to every state in the nation. While Betsy DeVos did not have the backing of state or federal politicians during her time as a private citizen, she was still able to successfully spread her concept to every corner of the country. Through Betsy DeVos’s work, school choice as a concept grew and found roots in 17 states, 33 private choice institutions, and the lives of more than 250,000 individual students. Florida alone has more than 50,000 students currently enrolled in school choice programs. Betsy DeVos managed to have this kind of reach as a private citizen and now she has the federal government on her side. Changes are coming.

Despite being handpicked by President Trump, Betsy DeVos knows that there will be times when she has to contend with the Republican party in areas of disagreement. One such area brought DeVos and President Trump to disagreement was federal policy relating to transgendered students. DeVos fought to keep the protections in place while President Trump still moved forward to get rid of them. Despite her personal stances that go against President Trump and the GOP, Betsy DeVos is still on board and willing to fight for conservative education reform with the backing of her party.

Educational reform is going to become one of the most important topics in our lifetimes and the lifetimes of our children and our children’s children. If school choice becomes adopted at the national level then the fundamental way in which children pursue their education will be changed. With that being said, Betsy DeVos knows not to count her luck just yet. Washington D.C. is divided just like the rest of the country and that means that there is a lot of work to do in the near future. Betsy DeVos is going to continue traveling around the country spreading the word about the importance of educational reform.
