Brazilian Guilherme Paulus is one of the richest and most successful businessmen in Brazil contributing to the country’s economy, since 1972. His birthplace is San Paulo where he grew up before attending college to study business administration.
He joined IBM as an intern and soon after formed a partnership with Carlos Vicente Cerchiari to establish CVC Brasil Operadora e Agencia de Viagens when he was 24 years old. It is his beginning that led to him becoming a billionaire and ranking number 1,268 on Forbes 2013 Billionaire List.
For four years, Guilherme Paulus worked for CVC under an agreement he would oversee the company’s day-to-day operations and ended the partnership with Cerchiari, in 1976. According to Gazette Day in August 2018, the tour operator went public in 2013 after Carlyle Group purchased over 63 percent controlling interest. To gain majority control, Carlyle paid $420 million to Paulus who serves on the Board of Directors as Chairman. He’s working with other members of the Board to expand store locations throughout Brazil. With stores in Brazilian malls, they are planning to add 100 establishments each year with the initiative of attracting diverse customers.
In 2005, Guilherme Paulus started GJP Hotels and Resorts, a chain of over 14 hotels and resorts in his home country. He invested approximately $600 million to open the establishments containing over 3,000 rooms combined. By hiring about 5,000 personnel, he has a remarkable influence on the country’s economy, households, and families in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Salvador, and other cities. A year after opening GJP, Paulus purchased Webjet, a small airline and financed 20 jets. He sold it Gol Linhas Aereas Intelligent S.A. for an undisclosed amount.
Guilherme Paulus accomplished building CVC to a leading tour operator with annual sales of $5.2 billion. Cerchiari helped him start the only Brazilian tour company in the country by providing the capital. At such a young age and working internship for IBM, he could not finance his business. Paulus continues to serve CVC and oversee the daily functions of GJP.
