The American Institute of Architects’ Impact on the Architecture Industry

In the past, anyone in the United States could pose as a professional architect because there were no architectural licensing laws or schools of architecture. After the establishment of the American Institute of Architects, all the incompetent, undertrained, and inexperienced individuals claiming to be architects were put on notice.

The History of the Establishment of AIA

The American Institute of Architects was established in 1857 in New York City. The organization brought together 13 highly skilled architects who were motivated to elevate the standards of the architecture profession. The AIA provides education, community redevelopment, government advocacy, and public outreach to boost the architecture industry and develop its image. The AIA also liaises with other construction and design programs in an effort to improve the construction industry. Robert Ivy is the current chief executive officer of AIA with Thomas V. Vonier serving as its president.
